Department of Secondary Education
Overview
The Department of Secondary Education prepares teachers to meet the needs of adolescents during their middle and high school years. Your favorite subject in high school unlocked a new world for you. Adolescence is a transformative time, and a great teacher can help students explore disciplines, hone their skills and pursue a career path.
Graduates are prepared for New York State Teacher Certification, usually within two years. Candidates may pursue single certification in: English, math, social studies, biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science and dual certification in Students with Disabilities with math, biology, social studies or English.

Five Year Dual Degree Teacher Education ProgramÂ
Interested in becoming a teacher? Take a look at our Dual Degree Program which allows students interested in the teaching profession to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at an accelerated pace.
Students can pursue a combined Adolescence Education M.S. in English, math, biology or history.

MS Programs: Candidates must have a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher and pre-requisite course work with a minimum of a C average.
BS or BA Degree and Coursework to Include:
- Mathematical Processes - 6 credits
- Historical and Social Sciences - 6 credits
- Language Other Than English - 3 credits
- Communications/Humanities/Written Analysis and Expression - 3 credits
- Artistic Expression - 3 credits Scientific Processes - 6 credits
- 30 credits in the area of certification (e.g. biology, mathematics, etc.)
